Buddhism is a religion to about 300 million people around the world. The word comes from "budhi", "to awaken". It originated approximately 2,500 years ago when Siddhartha Gotama, the first Buddha, was himself enlightened at the age of 35. Buddhism goes beyond religion to a philosophy or way of life. The Buddhist path can be summed up as leading a moral life, being mindful and aware of thoughts and actions, and developing wisdom and understanding.
Like Hindu art, Buddhist art stems from its culture and is therefore extremely vibrant and symbolic. As belief in Buddhism spread, so too did the creation of Buddhism inspired art. It adapted and evolved in each new country it reached, developing to the north through Central Asia and into Eastern Asia to form the Northern branch of Buddhist art, and to the east as far as Southeast Asia to from the Southern branch. In India, Buddhist art flourished and even influenced the development of Hindu art.
